This is a close up shot of one of the newer and very much smaller (2cm wide) of the sulphur vents on White Island, White Island (Whakaari) is about a 1.5 hour boat trip from Whakatane and is New Zealand's only live marine volcano. I'm no Volcanologist but I'll repeat what I picked up from our tour guide. These small vents occur due to pressure from all the gases trying to escape and finally a small vent just like this will emerge. Eventually these vents turn into Sulphur Mounds which can grow to be very large, I will look at posting one of these a bit later as well so you can see what I mean.

The first sulphur mining attempts on White Island began in 1886 but ceased soon after the eruption of Mt Tarawera. Another effort was made in 1913 but it was only three months before disaster struck and one man died. Shortly after, all that was left of another man was a pair of boots on the edge of the crater. In Sept 1914 the south-western rim of the crater collapsed, sending several buildings and the men in accommodation quarters, straight into the sea and killing 12 of the workers.

This is my first post on Trek Nature so please give me any comments you have as it will help me to make better post in the future as I'm rather new to taking these types of shots.

Hi Sean, welcome to TN.
And this is from White Island - wow, what an exciting place to go to. It's a island not many ever go to seeing it is a live and very active volcano... A dangerous place - was it scary?
This sulphur vent is amazing. I love the colour yellow, fortunately it shows up here quite well so we can see what you mean.
Good job, and I look forward to seeing more of your White Island shots, and others...
Janice

Hi Sean,
nice picture you started with.
Never seen sulpur in the nature before, I have never been a vulcano island either, so it's a interesting picture.
It's maybe a lack of contrast but nice colours and good POV( Point Of View)
Well done.

Welcome to TN.

Welcome in TN Sean, well done on this first one, it's very interresting and well done. I would have cropped a bit more to show more details of it though. Thanks !

Mario

Hi Sean

A warm welcome to TN.

I love this shot. Excellent low POV. I must say that it looks like a pile of desiccated coconut. Great colours. :-)

Very nice Sean. I've taken photographs of sulphur vents at Waiotapu, but they turned out very featureless so I think you have done well to capture such intense detail and colour from White Island.

Nicely framed and great focus.

Cheers
Vernon
