Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus)

Taxonomy
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Galliformes
Family: Phasianidae
Genera: Phasianus
Species: colchicus

Other common names: Common pheasant, ring-necked pheasant.

Description
Introduced bird: Male rich orange and red, glossy dark green head, red facial wattles with white ring around neck; females pale brown mottled with dark brown.

Habitat: Fertile cropland and cultivated grain fields interspersed with fallow weed lots, pastures, small wetlands, and occasional woody areas with underbrush.
Where to find: In the North Island they are common in northern and western districts but sparse in the South Island.
Weight: Males 1400 g., females 1200 g.
Length: Males 80 cm., females 60 cm.
Food: Adult ring-necked pheasants feed primarily upon waste grains, weed seeds, soft mast, and insects which are located by scratching. Harsh winter conditions can make food gathering activities difficult for these ground feeding birds.

New Zealand stock has been derived from various sub-species. They have repeatedly been introduced into New Zewaland since 1842. Most of our birds resemble the ring–necked pheasant from China, torquartus, especially in having a broad white neck ring.

There are about 50 species of pheasants. Practically all of them are native to Central Asia, Ukraine, and China. They have been introduced and widely established in various areas. Romans brought pheasants into Europe. According to mythology Argonauts took them from the river Phasis in Colchis. Egyptian Pharaohs kept Pheasants and Alexander the Great brought them to Greece from Asia.

It's beautiful.

Hi Pam,
Excellent portrait shot on this Ring Necked Pheasant. The comp. and framing look perfect. Very great colors and sharp detail. You can almost feel the texture with the nice 3D feel to this. Well done.

Gorgeous, Pam.
The colors and patterns on the head of that pheasant are just drop-dead gorgeous.
You captured and presented that beauty with expertise: Excellent sharpness and exposure. Great POV and skillful management of the DOF.
I love those two little "protuberances" coming out above the eyes.
TFS. : )

Beautiful portrait of this pheasant the detail is incredibly good and the colors are very rich. This is the firs time I've seen both the tufts at the same time in a picture. :)

Hi Pam,
A nice shot, you've captured the colours and irridescence perfectly. Nice light in the eye, excellent detail and lovely smooth and defocused BG. Nice shot! I posted one of these a while ago, beautiful birds and great to photograph.
Regards,
Adrian

Pam,
Besides the natural colors of the Ring-Necked Pheasant you cought a wonderful POV and keeping the background unsharp giving the bird its full value.

TFS,

Rolf
