[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Much of New Zealands North Island is dotted with volcanoes. In fact,a large part of the central North Island is a massive volcanic plateau, most of it the fallout of the massive eruption of Taupo, the crater which now forms New Zealands largest lake.
At the southern end of lake Taupo stand three large volcanoes, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro, and Mt Ngauruhoe, (Mt Doom in 'Lord Of The Rings').
Ruapehu is the highest at 2797 metres. It is an active volcano. It is also the centre of the skiing industry in the North Island, there being slopes on the north and south sides of the mountain. In September 1995 the skifields had to be evacuated after melting snow caused cold water to pour into the crater triggering an eruption. Luckily no one was hurt.
The last eruption that claimed lives was in 1953,on Christmas eve, when a huge lahar swept down the mountain taking a railway bridge and train with it,killing 151 people.
Most of the time the mountain is pretty benign, and only the occasional wisp of steam is seen.
This is exactly the kind of shot that is usually seen on calendars from agricultural suppliers in New Zealand rural towns.
I took this from the road between Ohakune and Waiouru to the south of the mountain.
I hope you like it.

Is that the mountain which they dropped the ring?

Nice post Steve, very good colours balance. A panoramic would be great.
Well done.
TFS.

Nice shot Steve. Great clear blue sky & the pasture - hills - snow-capped semi-dormant volcanoe make it great. I see ya even put the top of the volcanoe slightly off-center! ;-) It's a great shot!!

Beautiful scene Steve.
I can see snow on the top of the volcano, it looks great.
Very nice colours and composition.
Great work.

Beautiful place and very pastoral place and picture, I would crop a little bit at the top and at the bottom to create a panormic look, I am sending a workshop.

Jolie montagne, Steve. Great landscape. I like it very much. That makes one big main part change with regard to the previous photos. I like the others too. This one amazes me.
Thanks

Fantastic shot of the highest volcanoe in NZ. I have one great shot of this volcanoe too and will post it some day. It's often difficult to get a good shot of Ruapehu as there are often clouds which disquise the top. I've been in Tongariro National Park for 3 days and on just 1 day I was able to take decent shots of Ruapehu, Ngaurahoe and Tongariro. I love the sheep in the pic; very NZlandic! Well done! TFS!

Hi steve, trying to catch up a little, this veiw grabbed me from your recent selection of great images, as it shows what every kid draws as a volcanoe that perfect triangle on a flat base, the only differance is the wooly baa's leveling the site ready for the cricket team to move in ;0)))#
nice one steve TFS

Hi Steve , Très belle image.

If it was wildebeest I would have thought Kilimanjaro. ;) Very nice landscape Steve. Next time put it in a "pan" view and post it large view so we can see more of this lovely place. Well done.
