Taken on a sightseeing flight around the park.

The middle volcano is Mount Ngauruhoe (Mount Doom - see below) an active stratovolcano. It is the youngest vent and highest peak in the Tongariro volcanic complex on the Central Plateau of the North Island, and first erupted about 2,500 years ago. Although seen by most as a volcano in its own right, it is technically a secondary cone of Mount Tongariro.

The volcano lies between the active volcanoes of Mount Tongariro to the north and Mount Ruapehu to the south, to the west of the Rangipo Desert 25 kilometres to the south of the southern shore of Lake Taupo.

It erupted 45 times in the 20th century, making it one of the world's most active volcanoes in that period. It last erupted in 1975. Fumaroles exist inside the inner crater and on the rim of the eastern, outer crater.

There are several possible explanations for the mountain's name. The most plausible is Nga Uru Hoe, meaning "throwing heated stones".

In the early 2000s Mount Ngauruhoe was used as a stand-in for the fictional Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, achieving worldwide exposure.

The far, snow covered volcano is Ruapehu which largely composed of andesite and began erupting at least 250,000 years ago. In recorded history, major eruptions have been about 50 years apart, in 1895, 1945 and 1995-1996. Minor eruptions are frequent, with at least 60 since 1945. Some of the minor eruptions in the 1970s generated small ash falls and lahars (mudflows) that damaged skifields. There was a sudden violent outburst in september 2007.

Between major eruptions, a warm acidic crater lake forms, fed by melting snow. Major eruptions may completely expel the lake water. Where a major eruption has deposited a tephra dam across the lake's outlet, the dam may collapse after the lake has refilled and risen above the level of its normal outlet, the outrush of water causing a large lahar (violent, destructive mudflow).

Tongariro National Park is the oldest national park in New Zealand, located in the central North Island. It has been acknowledged by UNESCO as one of the 24 mixed cultural and natural World Heritage Sites.

Tongariro National Park was the fourth National Park established in the world. The active volcanic mountains Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe, and Tongariro are located in the centre of the park.

There are a number of Māori religious sites within the park, such as one at the grave to Te Heuheu Herekeikei. The summits of Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehuare are tapu (sacred).

wow..doesn't get much better than that, does it? What a view. Nice composition with the blue lake in the foreground, Mount Ngauruhoe in the middle where it should be, then the snow capped Ruapehu in the back, all sweeping in from the right. Sharp throughout and well exposed, great shot.

Superb shot of this classic cone volcano!
There is some amazing geography in New Zealand and this is a prime example of it!
It always amazes me how snow can stay frozen on a volcano, one of the (potentially) hottest places on Earh!
Great composition!

Very interesting note James.
I can see why Peter Jackson chose New Zealand to film The Lord of The Rings. The area is very unique and rugged looking with it's Volcanoes. Well captured with the sun behind you and nice blue sky.
