Papilio demoleus sthenelus
PAPILIONIDAE
Lime or Chequered Swallowtail
Papilio demoleus (Lime Swallowtail)
From: India, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea.
Hosts: Citrus and Pea families.

Photo taken at the Thames Orchid and Butterfly House.

This butterfly is also known as Lemon Butterfly, Citrus Butterfly, Lime Swallowtail and Chequered Swallowtail. It is the most common butterfly throughout Sri Lanka and South India, especially in the plains. It is seen on the wing throughout the year in quick and strong flight. It congregates in hundreds in mud puddles with closed wings to drink water. It visits flowers of all citrus, radish, curry leaf etc.

The adult butterflies have buff coloured wings with wide black edges containing buff spots. The hind wings also have two eyespots: one red and one blue. The underside is similar with narrower and paler black markings.

The butterflies have a wingspan of about 7-10 cms. Usually seen rapidly flying in one direction at a constant height, they only occasionally land, and catching one is a real thrill.

A member of the Papilionidae or Swallowtail family, the Chequered Swallowtail does not have a tail but shares the black and yellow colouring of many of the other swallowtails.

I did notice at the Butterfly House that there were slightly different coloured Lime or Chequered Swallowtail. Some showed more a buffy colour, whereas this one was lighter toned but with darker details.

Please let me know if my notes are incorrect.

Hi Janice

I like the juxtaposition of the inticate patterns of the butterfly wings and the green BG. The POV and DOF are both great also.

Hi Janice,
Lovely image of this butterfly! Superb sharpness and details and beautiful colours. Great composition, POV and DOF. Well done and TFS Cheers Tina :-)

Hi Janice,

This is a super super macro shot. The focus was spot-on, and I see you got your very good DOF from using F11. There is a slight bit of noise which is to be expected from using ISO 800, but it is not distracting at all. The detail on the wing is fantastic. Congratulations!

Jan-Hendrik

Beautiful butterfly image Janice.
Composition is excellent while sharpness and exposure are spot on.
Colors, color contrast and green color tones in the BG and the leaf the butterfly is on are most wonderful.
Excellent work.
Kind regards, Harry

Hello Janice

Nice and clear shot of a wonderful coloured butterfly. Very good sharpness all over the butterfly. Pity we do not have around. I have tried once to get on shooting range of these too - also in a Butterfly House but there were so many people that it was impossible to get a decent focus.

Hi Janice,
Great capture, excellent detail and very nicely framed, I agree with other critiques here that the lines created by the surrounding foliage are very pleasing. I still think it's amazing that a caterpillar can transform into something as beautiful as this. Nice work.
Cheers,
Adrian

Hi Janice,
This is a really excellent shot on this Lime Swallowtail. I think you nailed the exposure perfectly here. Nice vibrant color saturatin and sharp detail in the butterfly. A well controled DOF has softened the backround very well. Nice composition and framing. A really great shot!

Hi Janice

What a lovely butterfly. Isn't it just amazing, the grandeur, diversity, and variation our Creator has provided in nature? So much to enjoy – the exquisite, magnificence, and splendour all around us and we even have the technology to capture it and appreciate it time and time again. Like this gorgeous specimen that you have captured in all its delicate and brilliant beauty.

A fabulous composition with the insect’s body just off the left 1/3 vertical axis, the wings covering the rest of the photo towards the right, and the antennae reaching out to the top frame. You have nailed the exposure spot-on and the BG is absolutely marvellous, well OOF and totally complimentary to the butterfly. The colours are superb and the details are very well defined.

Great work and TFS.

PS. Since I did expect it, it was no real surprise that the AB's clobbered the Boks. The big surprise was that the Boks nearly pulled it through though, but after Butch left the field it seemed like the backline's wheels came off and the mighty black machine went into top gear. Congratulations, a well deserved victory.

Witaj Janice!
I thank for letter. I bought Kenko and lamp, Time will say how ladies me advice. I use tripod always because it from hand happens variously.
I greet warmly - Roma

Dear Janice!
I almostoverlooked this beauty :) Very nice profile, very detailed and sharp. I like both colouration and POV. And the note is also very good :)
By the way, what do you think about placing this picture to the gallery of PES? The link to this educational page you can easy find in my intro. Of course if you would be interested I can send you much more details :)
Have a nice day and best greetings from Lodz!
