Lake Waikaremoana

Te Urewera National Park
is a vast, remote region of forests and lakes straddling the Huiarau Range. The park's outstanding feature is the glorious Lake Waikaremoana ("sea of rippling waters"), a forest-girded lake with good swimming, boating, and fishing.

The lake is circled by a 50-km (31-mile) walking track; the three- to four-day walk is popular, and in the summer months the lakeside tramping huts are often heavily used.

This peninsula that you can see the sun is setting behind sticks out into Lake Waikaremoana, and is called the Puketukutuku Range , is the heart of a Kiwi Recovery Programme . Intensive trapping of predators (750 stoat traps) and monitoring of kiwi is carried out by DOC (Dept of Conservation)and local Maori tribe called Tuhoe . When tramping in the area you might be able to hear kiwi calling at night from across the bay.

When the road through the forest was completed in 1930, there was a lot of pressure to log the forest, burn the remains and farm the area. However, similar development on the coastal side of the ranges had already caused severe problems with erosion that persist to this day. Conservationists won in the end and Te Urewera National Park was established in 1954. It's the largest area of untouched native forest in the North Island.

Urewera means burnt genitals. It refers to a local chief on the eve of battle who slept too close to the fire, rolled in and received severe burns, dying of shock and shame. It's a tough (and perhaps a little sarcastic) name for an uncompromising region.

Lake Waikaremoana means sea of rippling waters lies between ranges in the southeast of the park, about 160 kilometres southeast of Rotorua.

We stayed a night at Lake Waikaremoana last week while we were travelling around the East Cape of the North Island of New Zealand . We were taken out on a boat and the sun was setting as we returned to the jetty. It’s a beautiful place and I loved seeing the trees and ferns and native bird life – I was in my element!!

Hello Janice,
Beautiful landscape.I liked POV,lighting and composition a lot.
Very well done.

Hello Janice,
Beautiful sunset view from the edge of the lake. The colours of the clouds against the blue sky are fascinating.
Your note gives a clear idea of the charm of this region in your country. The Maori names are quite mouthfuls but they sound very nice.
TFS.

Hello Janice!
What a nice seascape and what an interesting note! Great details in both of cases!.
In picture I like especially the beautyful contrast and colouration, in note - the myth is my favourite part! ;>
Greetings from Lodz and happy Easter!

Hi Janice,
This rocks! One of my fsvorite types of photograph. Sunset/Seascape. Well composed and framed. Some beautiful and dramatic clouds and colors in the sky. Wish I had been there to see it in person.
