New Zealand Waterway

We passed through Wairoa last week on our trip around the East Cape of the North Island of New Zealand.

This is the Wairoa River, from the road leading up to Lake Waikaremoana.

I like the look of the early changing colour of the Autumn leaves of the exotic trees growing along the river back. Not many of these trees here are native to NZ, but they were brought to NZ and planted along the riverbanks in many areas of NZ by early settlers from 180 years ago.

BTW, NZ doesn't have many deciduous native trees. The only one I can think of is is the Kowhai tree. So all the trees we see changing colour and losing their leaves in Autumn will be exotic trees, imported from overseas.

The Wairoa River runs south for 65 kilometres from the inland east coast region, west of Gisborne, before flowing into northern Hawke Bay at the town of Wairoa. It has a large catchment area which includes Lake Waikaremoana.

Wairoa and the history from the area goes back some 700 years with the arrival of the first Maori and their settlements around Mahia and on the banks of the Wairoa River.

Europeans arrived in the 1820's and following these flax traders came the whalers.

Trading in the area was by boat up and down the Wairoa river to the ships in the bay, called Hawkes Bay. Many traders had their own wharves along the river banks, much like the many local white-baiters have their small stands jutting out into the river today.

This picture was taken from a moving bus through a dusty window. I was unsure what to set my camera on, and I would be grateful for any tips and suggestions of the correct numbers to use from a moving vehicle.

Many thanks
Janice

Hello Janice,
Those notes are very interesting and so is this picture. I like this composition and POV a lot. It doesn't see to have been a sunny day and I guess that you set the maximum DOF that this lightning offered you. I think that some details are a little lost in a distance but it is due to the F 5.6 . I maybe would have tried with ISO 200 and to close the aperture a little up to F7.1 or 8. This is very nice and interesting place anyway and I like those colors too. Well seen and TFS,
Claudine

Hi Janice, lovely and peaceful composition with splendid river landscape, nice reflections, very well done, happy Easter to you, ciao Silvio

Hi Janice what a beautiful shot, with v. good perspective, of this lovely water way. I bet it is cleaner and more pure than many of ours in the UK. A great POV with good use of light, great colours.

Hi Janice,
a nice picture of autumn in NZ but I prefer the spring up here just now. ;-)) The spring came early this year but it has taking a pause at the time with cold nights and very windy days.
You picture is well composed, woth good POV and nice colours.
Well done, my friend.

Since I'm not here on regular basis I have missed your shots.
I hope everything is well.
