[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I found this earwig under one of my pot plants. As you can see by its pose it wasn't very happy about being woken up.

The name Earwig originates from the superstition that earwigs crawl into the ears of sleeping persons and bore into the brain. Although earwigs appear somewhat dangerous due to their forceps, they are practically harmless to man.

Earwigs vary in size from 1/2-1" in length, they are brown to black in color. Species may be winged or wingless. Only a few species are good fliers. The body terminates in a pair of forceps. These forceps or pincers are the earwig's most distinctive characteristic. The forceps are used in capturing prey and mating.

What do they feed on?

Earwigs are omnivorous, feeding on a wide variety of food. They will eat live or dead insects as well as live or decaying vegetation.

Why are they economically important?

Earwigs can cause damage to cultivated plants. They can be a nuisance when they migrate indoors. Migrations of earwigs numbering in the 100's have been reported. They seldom become established indoors. Some species will emit a foul odor. Earwigs can be of value as predators of certain insect pests.

Where can they be found?

Earwigs are nocturnal. During the day they will be found in moist shady places, under wood piles, stones, boards, compost piles, flower beds, and other secluded locations. When earwigs migrate indoors, they hide in cracks and crevices around baseboards and other locations. They may be found in potted plants and cut flowers.

I used the macro setting on my camera to capture this earwig.

Hi Sue, good close-up of the earwig. It has a similar head as a weta, don't you think? Only not as fierce!! And does he look mad. You make him look so big, and I don't think I've looked at one so close before. TFS.

Excellent POV and composition. DOF makes the earwig sharp from head to toe. This one looks mighty fierce!

Scary view for women, I think, but you are very brave Sue :-) Moment and pose are excellent. This is real, small defender of its home. Note is also very good.

Sue, unusual subject, great sharpness. Amazing how you managed to get a sharp picture by using only 1/40 - you've got steady hands.

Hi Sue, great shot! I love the pose of the earwig, thinks he is a scorpion! I think you did very well on what looks like pretty bad lighting. I like the composition you chose, very well done.

Hi Sue, I heard that story about earwigs burrowing into people's ears and eating their brain when I was a small child and it obviously made an impression on me at the time...I've not been able to stand them ever since. Your macro is definitely *not* helping . Having said that, I can still appreciate a good photo when I see one :) Lovely pose, details and sharpness and great composition to boot. Very nicely done :)

Lovely shot of the Earwig! Don't think I've ever seen one doing this, I'll be taking more notice next time I see one.

Great detail, POV and focus. Those forceps are really emphasized well and the lighting is perfect.

If you tone down the highlight areas in the background and adjust the levels and/or curves to add more contrast, the colours in your image will appear more saturated.

A crop to remove the dark patch in the top left area of the frame, and the dark stones in the bottom left, will add emphasis to the Earwig. I'll include a workshop to show this, hope you find it helpful.
