Tane Mahuta – “lord of the Forest”
Agathis Australia
Family: Araucariaceae
Genus: Agathis
Species: Australis, the only species in New Zealand
Pronounced: Tar-nay Mar-hoo-tar

This is Tane Mahuta, Maori for "lord of the Forest". It is the largest Kauri tree (pronounced cow-ree) in existence. Although there are taller kauris and stouter kauris around, this one wins overall. It is hard to accurately estimate the age of Tane Mahuta, but it may be that Tane Mahuta sprang from a seed around 2000 years ago during the lifetime of Jesus Christ.

Dimensions:
Trunk height: 17.7m – 58 feet
Total height: 51.51m – 169 feet
Trunk Girth: 13.77m – 45.2 feet
Diameter: 4.38m – 14.4 feet
Trunk volume: 244.5m

It was raining quite hard when we visited Tane Mahuta and you can see the mist showing in the top of the tree. I was wet, and the camera was wet, and I was shooting blind most of the time. I have brightened up the photo a bit to make it easier to see. I hope you like this historical NZ tree.

Notes from the Department of Conservation - Te Papa Atawhai.

P.S. They have built a boardwalk up to the tree, and also cleared the way so we can stand back here and photograph it. This was as far back as I could get to photograph it. The boardwalks also help protect the roots of the trees being damages by tourists, and we can't touch the tree either.

I took some photos closer to it and will post one later on. It is a HUGE tree to stand under.

Hello Janice!

Impressive subject today! Majestic and great looking. I like to think that this tree remember times when Jesus walked on Earth and when there wasn't Poland for at least 1000 years ;-) Tree looks great, photo is very good, but first of all this is good start for long story or chain of connections :-)

Lord of the Forest indeed. This must be really huge tree.
Though the weather was bad you managed quite well to get this shot. It's clear, sharp and the tree is well visible. I imagine it would've be hard to put it whole in frame ;)
I like it very much.
WELL DONE & TFS

Hi Janice,

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES !!!
I have ride more than 1000 km in one day just to go and see that tree in 1992...
What is impressive about this giant (besides Sequoia Park) is that you are in a look alike normal forest and than "bang!" you see this huge tree !!!

I have posted a picture from 1992 taken from the same angle so you can compare... my picture is way much darker.

Hi Janice, a very beautiful photo of this splendid tree, with interesting description
Ciao Silvio

Hi Janice
This old tree you captured has a great story to go along with it. Two thousand years old is very very old. Is nice to know it still standing and hopefully it will stand for a very long time to come. Thanks for sharing this rare view.
