Ferns in Waipoua Forest, New Zealand

I love ferns (did you know that?) and especially the ferns we have in New Zealand, where they grow in great abundance. We have nearly 200 native species alone occurring everywhere from the coast through to the country’s alpine regions. Then there are the fern allies – including club-mosses and fork-ferns that have an even longer fossil history than ferns.

Just over three hours drive north of Auckland on State Highway 12 you will drive through Waipoua Forest. The drive gives you wonderful scenery of the beauty of the forest. It winds through magnificent stands of tall kauri, rimu and northern rata, and many ferns trees and native bushes. I love driving north this way. There is so much to see, and the beauty of the trees, bushes, ferns, and mosses are so amazing.

This photo was taken in Waipoua Forest, very close to the Four Sisters, a graceful collection of four tall Kauri trees that grow in close proximity.

It was raining all the way up through the forest, and these ferns caught my attention with their wonderful colours in different stages of growth. You can see the newer frond at top right, the older darker fern at the bottom, and the dead one in the centre. I like how the rain has saturated them and made them shine in the wet.

Don’t you just love them??? Well, I do!

Janice

Hi Janice,
I have learned alot about ferns just from your posts. Always amazing colors, textures, and details in them. I love them too. We have a few varities that we grow in our shade garden, but nothing like what you have.

Hi Janice!

I love ferns also. They're beautifull and should be in every forest :-) Lovely tribute to ferns my friend - I love composition with three layers - light green, brown and deep green. Very sharp and detailed. No sign of pixelisomethingization I think :-)

This is beautiful!
I love the composition with young leaf as a main subject and the brown one in BG. Picture has lovely colours and very good details.
I like it a lot!
WELL DONE!

Hi Janice, intersting composition and the three layers of colour work well. Nice shot. Well done.

Hi Janice,
a lovely picture of ferns. I like the different colours of these.
Well composed, lovely colours and good POV. Maybe a wee soft.
Very well done, my friend.

+5C this morning, we have had a period with over +5C every day for a week. It's unusual for Jan. and the snow is melting.
But I know the winter will be back soon.

Hello Janice,

Sorry, no time for a decent comment, but definitely worth a ;-)

TFS.
