Waipoua Forest, Upper North Island, New Zealand

Last week we took my English cousin and her husband north to the Bay of Islands for a week’s holiday before Christmas, and I have been so busy since we got back – I took too many photos and they are taking too long to sort out!! And especially with all the family Christmas photos and the touring we’ve done showing them around Auckland as well. I think I will have enough photos to post for the next year.

Just over three hours drive north of Auckland on State Highway 12, between Aranga and Waimamaku, you will drive through Waipoua Forest. The drive gives you wonderful scenery of the beauty of the forest. It winds through magnificent stands of tall kauri, rimu and northern rata, and offers extensive views of the bush. I love coming north this way, as there is so much to see, and the beauty of the trees, bushes, ferns, and mosses are so amazing.

Waipoua Forest’s 2,500 hectares is one of the best examples of kauri forest in New Zealand and it contains three quarters of New Zealand's remaining kauri trees.

You can stop and park your cars and follow good walking tracks that give easy access to the most spectacular attractions of the forest: the giant Kauri trees “Tane Mahuta”, “Te Matua Ngahere” and “Yakas”. There is also a wheel-chair access to Tane Mahuta - Lord of the Forest. And there are a few tramping tracks and routes that are also available for those who wish to go deeper into the forest, especially in the high plateau and ranges.

The forest has the largest population of North Island brown kiwi in Northland, and a small population of kokako in the high plateau country.

We passed through some heavy showers as we drove up State Highway 12 and through the forest so I’m sorry about the grey sky, but I wasn’t going to change it. . .

Don’t you just love those Tree Ferns?

Looks like a great location you composed it well with the road leading out of the diagnal lovely sharp foliage. TFS rgds Necip.

Hello Janice,
This looks so exotic to me; it has nothing to compare with our kind of forest. Yes, I love those Tree Ferns. I amazed by this deep green color. Details and POV are splendid. You really are on the other side of the world as your vegetation is so different from here. This is a beautiful and educative post. Thanks and have a great New Year to come!
Claudine

Hi Janice.
Very nice and perfect sharpen view. Very expressive incline of the road and pictorial vegetation. I also like the lighting and shadows of the shot, POV and DOF. Well done and my best wishes at holiday time.

Hi there Janice. That's what we missed when Sandra and I visited beautiful NZ; the Northland/Bay of Islands. We only had 4 weeks and so many things to see. Thank you for showing us how beautiful that place is. How I would love to drive that road in the picture! Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter
