[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Waipoua Forest, Upper North Island

Just over three hours drive north of Auckland on State Highway 12 you will drive through Waipoua Forest. The drive gives you wonderful scenery of the beauty of the forest. It winds through magnificent stands of tall kauri, rimu and northern rata, and many ferns trees and native bushes. I love driving north this way. There is so much to see, and the beauty of the trees, bushes, ferns, and mosses are so amazing.

Waipoua Forest’s 2,500 hectares is one of the best examples of kauri forest in New Zealand and it contains three quarters of New Zealand's remaining Kauri trees. It is famous for having the two largest living Kauri trees “Tane Mahuta and Te Matua Ngahere” , which are easily accessible.

This is taken from the track that leads to some of the above trees. Here you can see young Rimu trees and Manuka along with Bracken and Kiokio ferns.

The forest has the largest population of North Island brown kiwi in Northland, and a small population of kokako in the high plateau country.

I took this photo the week before Christmas when we were took our English rellies up to the Bay of Islands on holiday.

Hello Janice!

This is real bush! I think every single plant here is worth to be photographed. Very dense composition with jungle mood. Ferns are my favourites, like always, but I like also big plant in upper left corner. Great show of NZ vegetation.

A very good effort and well done on the composition.
A slight over exposure and a blue cast.
At 100 ISO, 1/125 at f11 Sunny F16 rule is very good for landscapes.

Hi Janice,
The Waipoua Forest is beautiful. So lush and colorful. Great detail with dense vegetation. It reminds me of those scenes you see in movies where dinosaurs are roaming about. It looks like very old growth forest.

I know how hard it is to get the right exposure in this kind of forest. Shows a nice range of plant types. Actually the lighting in the small thumbnail is nice.

It's nice to see this amazing habitat, very exotic to me in fact. I just can imagine those hundreds of invertebrates crawling around and worth to be photographed :-)
