[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is my second post of this large native New Zealand hoverfly.
It is a Bush Gadfly,Scaptia adrel.
Sometimes seen hovering back and forth between flowering shrubs in forest clearings or resting on mossy logs,it can often be mistaken for a very large blowfly.
(I have actually only ever seen one..this one)
The yellowish white tuft of hairs on each side and the pointed looking wings make it easy to identify at rest.
It breeds in moss or mud and the maggot is carnivorous.

Good macro of hoverfly Steve!First I thought the white thing on the stone was light but I see that it's nature of stone, makes the shot more interesting...TFS

Very nice macro Steve. I like the pattern of light falling on the stone (probably coming through the leaves of the trees above your head?). You did very well. Luckily this isn't a sandfly!!! I have had a very bad experience with those suckers, I can tell you that. When I waited to enter the Glowwormcaves at Te Anau, the Sandflies hit me (before I didn't get bitten) and had the worst itch in my life!! I got bitten on November 12th and back in NL on November 25th it still itched!! Anyway, good picture! :)

Very good macro, with several levels colour contrasts and a nice light ggradient from top left to bottom right.
When you say big, just how big is that by the way ?
Someone (sorry, forget who just now)once pointed to me that with such a global audience as this list has, some quantitative mention of size is in order, and I believe that is a good idea.

Very shaggy and with black wings. I also like stone on which it is sitting - for first sight I though that there are sunspots on it.

Nice shot Steve. Very good details. TFS!

Belle macro! Même si la photo est en couleur, j'aime beaucoup les dominantes noir et blanc! Super!
