The Giraffe Weevil, Lasiorynchus barbicornis [subfamily:Brentinae] is New Zealands longest and strangest looking beetle.This particular specimen is a female...on the male, the 'snout' is longer than the entire body and long antennae at the very tip make it look very comical indeed.
The females bore into rotting logs to lay eggs (October to March) and the grubs remain there for up to two years, feeding on fungi and yeasts on the decaying wood. The hole the adult leaves as it emerges is not round, but perfectly square! The males, which can grow to nearly 10cms, fight with their snouts when competing for territory. The adult lives for only two weeks...and it can fly!
The Maori name is also the name of a Maori god of a newly made canoe, Tuwhaipapa.

[I have just returned from a three day camping trip,with Jan and the kids,on the Awaroa River,a very secluded spot in the hills of the North Island west coast (south of Pirongia). I managed to get a few really good shots while I was there, and look forward to sharing some of these over the next few days.]

Good macro shot of this Giraffe Weevil, which I have never heard of Steve. Interesting notes too.
You should have had good camping weather - just as well you're not out tenting now - the tent would blow away. Kia ora.

Hi Steve. You were in the right distance this time, you got a very good shot considering that F:2.8 1/40 handheld. The photo is very strong and the bug is big and detailed, just how I like them :D

Very interesting Steve, you realise now that you have mentioned the male that I will want to see one ASAP. It's a very good shot for F2.8 and 1/40 s. Well done.
