[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a New Zealand Bush Gadfly,Scaptia adrel, a large native hoverfly often seen hovering about 2 metres above the ground or resting on tree trunks in native forests.I haven't yet found much information on this insect except that it breeds in mud or moss and that the maggot is carnivorous.
The stones here are of interest too.I'm not certain of the geological makeup of this region. There are layers of soft limestone and areas of mudstone, varying in colour from creamy whites or ochre browns,to very deep reds and browns to nearly black.
Although these stones are very attractive, they will often fall apart if picked up or trodden on.I also found pieces of quartz here,a sign of much older layers near the surface too.
Later on I'll post a closer view of this Gadfly, and a few more pretty stone pics.
Hope you enjoy these. Steve.

Very good shot Steve. The white spots on the stones look like reflections from underwater. Amazing look. Focus on the fly is perfect.

Nice Picture, i agree, the spots on the stones and the fly makes it a special photo...

Great shot.
Very interesting and unusual capture.
Nice composition and POV.
Well done!

First, this fly is unusual for us, with these white dots on the body and the wings, and it's very well catched. But the stones arrangement and soft colors are very attractive, so there is a mutual enhancement between stones and fly. All together, a very nice composition, Steve.

Looks like he has took a wrong turn and ending up in a psychedelic night-club, 'The Floyd' and Austin Powers will be on in a minute. Twwaaang.

It's a great shot Steve, I love the lighting effects and very good detail on the fly considering the lighting. Great job.

Nice macro, Steve. Very interesting h\fly I have not seen before. Very sharp and well composed. The patterned rocks is a nice added touch. Two for the price of one. TFS.

This is a good macro close up. Good collors and DOV. At first I thought this was a sandfly. When I visited NZ in November these sandflies drove me crazy! Man, even after I was back in NL the stings they gace itched and itched for weeks to come! Nice photo Steve!

This is a particulary excellent picture, Steve.
The patterns for the fly get married perfectly with the patterns of the surrounding stones. Il like it very much.
A more than excellent post.
Thanks.
