Pukeko
Porphyrio melanotus
These colourful swamp hens are extremely common throughout low lying areas of New Zealand and are even considered a pest by some people.Very similar species occur in other countries,where they are known as Purple Gallinule.
They are quite nervous birds,and when alarmed will flick their tails to display the white underside as a warning to other Pukeko.Usually,they need to run a considerable distance to take off,but once aloft they are strong fliers.
They often have more than one mate,and will build several rough nests,laying between 4-7 eggs in each one.They feed on plants and small animals,and can sometimes be seen holding food in a foot.
Thes particular birds were photographed at the lake in Hamilton city in the North Island.

They are such handsome and colorful birds.
