Getting away from New Zealand Natives for a bit...
This is a Two Spined Spider, Poecilopachys australasiae, thought to be introduced from Australia in the 1970s. They were first found around Auckland in the north of the North Island,and have gradually spread as far as Wanganui in the south.
They are often found on citrus trees,although this one is on a Helenium (sneezeweed) flower.
This is a female,usually less than 1 cm across. The males are smaller and lack the distinctive spines. By day,the Two Spined Spider hides beneath leaves,but at night it emerges to spin a strong cartwheel shaped web,which is capable of catching moths,wasps and cicadas many times its own size. As dawn approaches it recycles the web by eating it.The egg sacs are a distinctive spindle shape.

Nice one Steve, this is a really colourful spider and a very intereesting shape. I think it's the first of it's kind on TN. The focus has been well directed but you really need to use F8 if possible for these shots. Very good work.

Steve, this is most amazing spider I've ever saw! I like its colours and extraordinary shape. It is great picture with flower as BG which in fact is less lolorful than your main subject. Superb work!

It looks very small. I have never see nthis before. Very fascinating post, Steve. When you shoot these critters get the F-stop as low as light allows. The DOF is ok but could be larger. Great shot the color of the flower adds extra impact.

I don't think I have ever seen a spider such as this. I would imagine that they would be colored like that because they are very poisonous then again maybe not. Nice capture Steve interesting post. Well done.
