Mandarin Duck

I think the female Mandarin duck is so attractive with her awesome eyes, even more attractive than her husband.

The male Mandarin duck has the most detailed and ornate plumage with distinctive long orange feathers on the side of the face, orange 'sails' on the back, and pale orange flanks. He has a chestnut and green crest, a wide white stripe along the eye, a bright chestnut coloured side and a red bill. The male's breast is plum coloured, its belly is white, its back is dark and its sides are mottled buff. He is considered by many to be the most beautifully coloured of all waterfowl.

Mrs Mandarin is dull by comparison with a grey head and a curving white stripe behind the eye, brown back and a series of white blotches on the underparts. But I think she is so beautiful especially with her pretty dark eyes and cp;opr patterns around her head.

But for most of the summer, the male Mandarin ducks do not have their distinctive plumage and look very much like the females. Following the breeding season, the males moult all of their colourful feathers, which do not re-grow until sometime in the fall. Mandarin ducks are one of the "perching" ducks. They have sharp talons and spend much of their time in trees.

Nice picture Janice
There is a lot of details on the neck and breast of the bird. All the withe spots are so clear.
I would have probably brush more the BG has it is disturbing a bit but the bird is so nicely focused that it deserve a big smiley :-))))))

The Mrs. is beautiful too, Janice. I can't say that I have ever seen a Mrs. Mandarin before. Most people focus on the Mr. with the vibrant colors. But I really like HER. You did a great job of showing the beautiful pattern on her plumage in very sharp details and excellent light. Well done and TFS. : )
