New Zealand Pukeko
(Porhyrio melanotus)
The Pukeko is an extremely common visitor to lowland pastures, estuaries, and swampy areas throughout New Zealand.
They feed on a variety of plants and small animals and can sometimes be seen standing on one leg and holding food with a foot.
They are often polygamous, taking several mates, and will build a number of bulky nests, and lay 4-7 blotched eggs.
They are generally shy birds, and when approached, will flick their white undertail as a warning to other birds.
It is unusual to see one cose up and from the front like this, as they tend to be quite evasive.
This particular view makes the bird appear much more slender than we usually tend to think of them, indeed, this seems a particularly elegant pose, hence my title.
The Pukeko is similar to species found in other countries such as North America were they are known as Purple Gallinule.

Hi Steve.
That is a nice composition front on, I like the slight tilt of the head so you can see the eye and that thick beak they have. Normally in bright sun you think a bit harsh but here the sun has brought out the depth of colour in him really well. Nice image.
