Yesterday I posted a photo of the New Zealand Praying Mantis, and touched briefly on the threat posed to our native species by the introduced South African Mantis.

Although the South African Mantis is sometimes smaller in bulk,it is a far more aggressive species.
The females quite readily eat the male after mating,which the New Zealand species do not.
Also,the South African Mantis can survive through the winter months,which the New Zealand ones rarely do.

Here we see a South African Mantis which has found a female of the New Zealand species.
How much of a threat to the native species the African Mantis poses is unclear as yet,but it is known that many New Zealand species are very vulnerable to competition or predation as many have evolved largely unchallenged until recent times.
The extent of the threat to our native mantis may not become known for many years to come.

Yes, your words are tight - I think we are going to lose our native mantids to these SA invaders. We have quite a few up here now.
