Bridal Veil Falls

* Approximately 45 minutes from Hamilton.

These falls are among the most spectacular in the North Island. The water shoots out over a rocky amphitheatre and falls 55 metres into a deep plunge pool at the bottom. It’s a straightforward, flat walk (10 minutes) in to the top of the falls through mature native bush and along the edge of the Pakoka River most of the way. At the top of the falls there are two excellent viewing areas, one right alongside the top of the waterfall with views down its length to the pool at its base. The other viewing platform is a short distance down from the top, and gives a view of the waterfall from the side. It’s also worth taking the steep steps down to the bottom of the falls for another, very dramatic view. The descent is steep but stepped all the way down (10 mins) with handrails in places. From here you can look up and see the band of hard basalt rock around the top of the falls, then the relatively soft sandstone that’s been eroded away to form the natural amphitheatre. The Maori name for the falls is Waireinga which means “water of the underworld” – reference maybe to the way the water disappears at the foot of the falls, and then slips away as a stream under cover of more native forest. Beautiful vegetation (mature bush, big fern-like native plants around the edges of the pool, sometimes even small native orchids beside the track) and spectacular views.

Hi Pam!
Just fantastic landscape! I almost forget how beautifull NZ is! Water frozen in time, with excellent shadows/light play and tropical plants around. This is perfect postcard my friend!

Hello Pam,

You managed a very nice shot of a lovely waterfall. So often they are difficult to expose properly and also hard to get the whole think within the frame. You found a great vantage point. Exposure, sharpness and saturation all seem good to me.
