The kaka is a large parrot belonging to the nestorinae family. There are two sub-species of kaka: the North Island kaka (Nestor meridionalis septentrionalis), and the South Island kaka (N m. meridionalis) Both sub species have brown/green feathers with brilliant flashes of orange and scarlet under their wings.
their has been three of these kaka in my yard for aweek now eating apples

How great to have them in your garden Colin. I wish you would write up notes about the bird. Apart from us who live in NZ, no one else knows what they are.
