This is a young specimen of the Ear Fungus (or Jews Ear) Auricularia polytricha.
They are common in shaded forest areas throughout New Zealand.
They are edible,and around the late 1800's were even exported from New Zealand to China where they are considered a delicacy.
Large Auricularia can develop interesting rippled shapes and bands of colour,making them quite spectacular as some of my earlier posts show.
This young one is fairly plain as Ear fungi go,but interesting nonetheless.

This is quite fascinating -- I haven't seen anything quite like them up in my part of the world. Ah -- and spot-on in all the technical details, with great textures, colours and composition. TFS
