Chinese Paper Wasp
Polistes chinesis
These wasps were introduced into New Zealand in the late 1970s and have become well established throughout the North Island and in the warmer northern parts of the South Island.
They are a common sight in summer months flying back and forth along corrugated iron fences and roofs, clothes lines, or any metal that absorbs and radiates heat from the sun.
They are mainly carnivorous and can sometimes be found devouring caterpillars and grubs.
Their paper constructed nests are usually found on the north facing (sunny side of shrubs and small trees, and are very abundant in hot dry areas of manuka scrub.
I encountered dozens of these in an afternoons scrub cutting southeast of Auckland.
The eggs and grubs can plainly be seen in the cells of this nest in the photo.
The nests are usually abandoned in the winter and the wasps will hibernate in leaf litter or in loose soil, sometimes under houses.
These wasps are not particularly aggressive, but can inflict a painful sting if mishandled or treatened. |
