Zebra (Equus burchelli bohmi)

Zebras are a type of wild horse that inhabits the plains and mountains of East and Southern Africa. They are social animals and live in herds of between 5 and 15 animals. Two species of zebra have become extinct, and a number of others remain threatened with the risk of becoming endangered. Many have been killed by hunters and farmers because they were competing with cows and other stock for grazing. Today, African governments and wildlife organisations have set up nature reserves where zebras can live without the risk of being hunted.

No two zebras are the same - the stripe patterns are unique to each animal. Zebras' stripes also help to camouflage them in long grass or the contrasting pattern may confuse attacking lions when a herd is attempting to escape.

Zebras love to roll in mud and dust. A natural mud pack, this shields against insects, heat and the wind. When the mud dries, they shake it off, along with loose hair and flakes of dry skin.

Hi Pam,
a very nice portrait, with good detail and nice colours.
The POV and composition are good too.
On my monitor this is a bit dull, a small lack of contrast, otherwise it's a very mnice picture.
Well done, my friend.

At last has the winter arrived, -11C this morning and 10cm snow.

I guess it is zebra-day today as I just critique a similar one from Daniel.
Very good image indeed, Pam!
There is some misty atmosphere in it as if comes from the breath from the animal which I like (not the breath of the animal of course:-).

Hi Pam,
This fellow seems to have much more black than white, he looks quite unusual. It's a nice shot, superb detail especially on his nose (does a Zebra have a nose or a snout or something else? I don't know). Good eye-level POV and great DOF. Good work.
Adrian
BTW I saw your camera dilemna on the forum and as I've never used Canon kit I can't offer any advice, sorry!

Hi Pam

A lovely portrait of one of my favourite animals. They are so photogenic and mostly very co-operative to pose.

A fine vertical composition with great cropping applied. The colours do seem a little strange as it resulted in a smoky hue that seems to lean toward blue. The details are excellent showing amazing definition on the zebras features, the BG is well outside the range of the DOF thus perfectly OOF, and you managed the lighting rather well.

Good work and TFS.

Hi Pam ,

Hello Pam,

Great detail has been achieved in this wonderful capture. I couldn't help but read Gert's note, and from this end the image looks great. Also remember not everybodies monitors are set at the same brightness and contrast levels. Reading most the notes tells me the majority also agree that it looks great. :)
