[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This remarkable bird is a Takahe, a native of New Zealand. It is the size of a small turkey or very large hen. It is totally flightless. Takahes were thought to be extinct but a small colony was found in 1948 and since then the birds have been closely guarded and encouraged to breed. There are a few on Kapiti Island which is just north of Wellington. This island has been restored to its native state - no humans, rodents, possums - so that native bird and plant species can thrive. It is open to restricted numbers of visitors. These are grass eating birds and it took a while to see enough of it over the thick tussock grass to get a clear image.

Amazing bird, John. Very interesting-looking. Sharpness is spot on. I like the hints of blue on the feathers that look like fur. You are very lucky to have seen one in the flesh. Great job and TFS. : )

Wow John you took this on Kapiti Island; what a great experience for you to go there and see these birds. They have an amazing history, and it is so good to know that they are not 'extinct' any more.
It looks very much like the Pukeko does, but larger. Excellent capture, colours and details are all very sharp. Well done, thank you...
