Kingdom: Fungi
Phylum: Basidiomycota
Class: Basidiomycetes
Order: Agaricales
Family: Tricholomataceae
Genus: Gliophorus
Species: G. lilacipes

This intriguing fungus is a member of the waxgill group called this due to a wax like appearance to the gills and this particular fungus belongs in the genus Gliophorus. The members of this genus are those waxgills with a glutinous cap and stipe. This gives the fungus a number of advantages the glutinous cap for example gives the fungi water proofing which is handy when you live in a subtropical forest. The glutinous cap and stipe also makes it harder for insects to land on with out getting stuck and laying eggs. G. lilacipes also has one more advantage that not all of the Gliophorus have in that it has a glutinous edge to the gills.

This is to our advantage as helps separate this species from the similar one G. versicolour both of which are viable in colour. G. lilacipes contains a range of colours from yellow, green, blue and lilac/red. The distribution of colour is variable depending on age and more surprising location as different locations have different combinations.

This particular fruiting body if showing environmental change some time during its growth there’s been a change in the weather causing the fungus to dry out a bit. With the result the glutinous material on the cap and stipe has congealed giving these a roughened appearance.

Beautiful image; shows the fungi and habitat very well, and the colours are well saturated. I didn't realize there was all this fungi still about with now being into the winter months; I've been too busy to go out and look all this season but I see I've still got a chance to go and find something out there. :)

Hallo Clive
I do not have much knowledge about fungi and because of that I prefer not to give my comments on these kinds of postings. I can however not let this beauty pass without adding my little comment for what it is worth. A well composed image with good and clear details. The colour of your background emphasise the details and colour of the fungi even more. A splendid, almost excotic image indeed. Trek Nature is without a doubt a very interesting and most educational site. Not a day will pass that I don't see or learn something new. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your day.
Kind regards.
Anna
