"Hey mister, you need some air in that ol' Michelin." And so spake the "tyre bird" (my nickname)as he prowled the parking lot of us hikers ascending various trails in Arthurs Pass, South Island, New Zealand.
Wekas (Gallirallus Australis) are everywhere in NZ, but they skulk and you often don't notice them. I chased this guy around for a good pic and gave up, until it seemed mesmerized by this tyre and I was down on the gravel to capture this image - just for you fellow TN-ers!

Good catch John, I've only seen them running off in the distance. What an unusual looking bird, it looks like the wind was blowing his feathers up! The pink lipstick and stockings clash with his red/brown feathers too. TFS,
Janice

Hi John,
Great catch. Yes these guys are hard case. I think everyone who has been to the west coast of the south isaland with a camera ends up running around their car after a shot. Good sharp cature, which is hard given they way they move around.TFS
