| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This is the very common Red-Billed Gull ("Akiaki") - widespread in New Zealand and Australia. In my travels there I was struck over and over again by their beauty, but they often make nuisances of themselves as noisy scavengers with a penchant for french-fries/chips!
This image is from a nesting site near the seal colony south of Kaikoura on the South Island. I annoyed the breeding gulls intensely and got fairly well dive-bombed and splattered with their red (matches their beaks and feet), fishy smelling poo!
Someone will have to tell me the name of the lovely succulent plant that this young parent is nesting on.
Post-processing: Crop, levels, burn applied to some of the flowers to slightly darken them, sharpened, border added. |

Great composition, love the way the greys of the bird and rocks contrast with the colourful flowers. TFS. Dean

John, she looks so comfy there sitting on her seaweed nest among the flowering succulents. How close were you to her, as she looks quite content with you there, not often the case? Well composed, TFS.
I'm sure it is the Iceplant - Carpobrotus Edulis, quite a pest once it gets going in some places.
Not a hugely interesting main subject but the mixture of colours and textures surrounding the bird make a very pleasing photo.
Well done.
great pic, is the succulent native? TFS Ori
