KEA (Nestor notabilis)

Size: 46-48cm.

Status: Common.

Range: South Island high country from Marlborough and Nelson to Fiordland. Straying to coastal areas.

Habitat: Native forest and the sub-alpine and alpine zones.

Food: Leaves, buds, fruits, insects and carrion.

Voice: A penetrating and drawn out “keaa” and a variety of softer calls.

Breeding: July-January. Two to four white eggs.

General: Has been persecuted as a sheep killer but there is some doubt as to the extent it attacks healthy animals. A very cheeky bird, this mountain parrot is quite capable of doing damage to your car by pecking all the rubber from around the windows and pulling off windscreen wipers—not to mention what it might do to what you have on your roof rack! Partially protected (may be hunted or killed by an occupier of land only when causing damage on that land).

HI Pam,
Great shot.
I love the details you have captured in the feathers.
Nice work
I am hoping to get a shot like this when we travel to Arthurs Pass in January. If it is half as good as yours I'll be happy.
:)

This darling also loves pulling tents to pieces, ripping open backpacks, getting into your food, and having many, many other annoying and costly habits.
This is a super shot Pam, he looks so harmless and innocent. But his details and colours are spot on. Perfect photo of him, well done.

This is a very nice potrait Pam. The details are razorsharp and the composition is great. Catchlight in the eye is there. ;) Good POV. The BG is a little bright but I guess there wasn't much you could do about that because of the time of the day. TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Good portrait, good background. Good sharp plumage and bill details. Good POV. Well done.

Hi Pam,
Superb portrait on this Kea. The detail is razor sharp. The light is perfect, giving beautiful colors on the bird. Very, very nice shot!

I don't know why but this cute bird looks little sad for me. Very nice portrait Pam with good calm colours and great details on its feathers. Really good post.

Bela foto, gostei da nitidez e do contraste da ave com o fundo.

Why do feathers look so good? This picture makes me remember when I walked the Milford Track in 1970 and lay on my tummy at Authurs Pass photographing a Kea while its mate went around behind be and starting ripping off the soles of my shoes. Little devil... but a great NZ icon for sure. Haven't the grays and greens been highlighted well in the picture. I liked it a lot. I like the light background as well that makes the Kea stand out. Thanks. Barry.
