[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Returned last night from our annual campervan holiday, 19 days in the South Island. The weather was kind, with the rain only appearing on arrival to the West Coast. This is the first of many photos taken over the holiday. Thanks for looking.

Yellow breasted Tomtit (South Island Male)

Range: Can be found in most forested areas throughout New Zealand including Stewart Island, but absent from large areas of farmland in the Waikato and Canterbury. Also on off shore islands, but not on Tiri Tiri Island.

Description - male bird:

Head, throat and upperparts: Black.
Frontal dot above bill: White.
Wings: Black with a conspicuous white wingbar.
Underparts: Pure white on the North Island bird and white, washed with yellow, on the South Island and Chatham Island birds.
Tail: Black with white edges.

Description - female bird:
Upperparts: Brownish.
Frontal dot above bill: Less conspicuous than on male bird and sometimes absent.
Wingbar: White, but less obvious than on male birds.
Chin and breast: Grey brown.
Underparts: Greyish.

Conspicuous characteristics:
The confiding nature of this bird is engaging. Birds seem to just arrive and they have the habit of peering down with head on one side.
Although usually to be found inside the forest, Tomtits will venture out for short spells from forest verges into cleared areas.
Birds often are seen clinging on to the side of trunks with head down. Birds often seek out people, look, and then fly off.

Call: Song, delivered by the male bird, is a fragile "sweedle sweedle sweedle swee". Male birds in nesting territories can be very vocal.

Nest: A bulky structure of twigs, fern, moss and cobwebs, lined with feathers and tree fern hairs, on a branch fork or a cavity in a bank. Up to 5 cream, yellow speckled eggs are laid.

Hi Pam, this is a beautiful bird, it looks like our Long Tail Tit in shape. You have caught it very well with great catch light on the eye. Lovely POV and DOF is perfect. Nice focus on the feathers, soft but sharp. Lovely composition.

Hi Pam.
Wonderful photo, detail from using the fill flash is lovely. As we know deep bush canopy's can make for some very slow shutter speeds. Here you have captured his colour really well and DOF, perfect.
The white mold on the end of the branch is slightly distracting, it could be toned down in your photoshop so it does not take the attention away from the Tomtit.

About time...(chuckle), welcome back. I hope you had a great time and by the look of this first post we are in for a real treat. This is such a cute, endearing little bird.

I love the composition, POV, and cropping. The colours and contrasts are great. The details are pin sharp and the exposure was well handled.

This posting actually made me adjust my monitor a little brighter. At first I thought that the dark BG was a bit too dark as the top (black) parts of the bird disappeared in the BG, but then I realised that some gremlin adjusted my monitor settings and now everything looks just a tad more illuminated.
