[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is the Maruia Valley, looking northwards from the Shenandoah Saddle,on the road from the Lewis Pass towards Murchison. The Maruia River flows northwards about 40 kilometres inland from the West Coast and then joins the Buller River to flow out to the coast at Westport.
Both the Maruia and Buller are reputed gold and trout rivers as well as being popular destinations for whitewater enthusiasts.
About 20 years ago I lived on a commune at the edge of the small town of Murchison in the middle of the mountains. Temperatures sometimes fell to
-14 degrees in the winter.
Most of the forests you can see covering these mountains are beech forests, comprising a mixture of Black Beech and Mountain Beech,Red Beech and Hard Beech.
German wasps have become a real plague in the South Island Beech forests, feeding on honeydew exuded by scale insects that live on the trunks of Beech trees.
