Purakaunui Falls

Purakaunui Falls is a picture of beauty, and even though Purakaunui means 'big heap of firewood' in Maori, this is a magnificent waterfall that cascades 20m over three distinct tiers.

The falls are located 17 km (11 mi) to the southwest of the small town of Owaka and five kilometres (3 miles) from the river's outflow into the Pacific Ocean.

The falls are in an isolated area surrounded by native bush in a scenic reserve of 5 km² (2 sq mi), and fall 20 m (66 ft) in three tiers.

They can be reached via a short, well-signposted bush walk from a gravel side-road off the main Owaka-Invercargill road.

The falls were featured on a New Zealand postage stamp in 1976.

Hello Pam,
Beautiful three tiers waterfalls with unspoil surroundings. Excellent composition and pov. Very well done.
JC

They certainly are beautiful falls Pam,and you've captured them very nicely.
I'd never heard of them before, but I've only been down that way once and was passing through on a bus to Milford.
Lovely shot.
Hope you are well.
Cheers, Steve :)

Hi Pam,
Beautiful falls..thank you for sharing this from your trip...So on your trip, you saw the fall ;-}} OK, dumb joke :)
Well composed with nice color and light. I like the slight smoothness I see at 1/30th...just enough.
Very well done.

Beautiful waterfall superbly captured.
Great exposure and composition.

Nice landscape. I think it a bit unfortunate to have a milky colour at the bottom and a little lack in saturation.

Delicada y melancólica composición Pam.
Suaves y umbrosos colores para realzar aun más ese efecto.
Excelente postal de un paisaje maravilloso.
Saludos... Ricardo

Delicate and melancholic Pam composition.
Smooth and shady colors to even heighten more that effect.
Excellent postcard of a wonderful landscape.
Regards... Ricardo

Very nice water fall Pam. The long shutter just did the job here making the water very soft. Focus is spot on with great sharpness all over. The picture looks a little under exposed in the left side sjowing almost no details which I think you could easily adjust in PS using Shadows and higlights. Apart from that it is a very pleasant picture to look at.

Wow! Pam,

I feel like you were somewhere in Lothlorien (elfe contry on the Lord of the Rings of Tolkien!). I'm waiting to see a fairy or a lovely unicorn coming from the wood!

The shutter speed you used here (3/10s) is perfect to obtain that soft water! (BTW, how do you had the "More Photo Info" within the "Photo Information" section?)

Exposure is perfect also! You got a great pov and did a splendid composition! TFS,

Michel (who is very impressed!)

Bonjour Pam

Pam

you have really caught the waterfalls beautifully here with a great timer exposure and fantastic composition.

Emma

This is a beautiful waterfall, Pam. The slow shutter speed is effective without the water losing definition and flow. I like the composition but agree with Mogens that it seems a little underexposed. I tried a quick workshop to see if I could perk it up a little . Just an idea...

Hi Pam!
No small cuties today? Excellent place! I love water, especially waterfalls. Beautifull. And your POV and long exposure made it even better.

Hello
excellent image and composition
great experience and peaceful moment.
Regards

A mystical place you have captured your image alone of those beautiful cascading falls is a pleasure to view. :)

Hi Pam,
What an impressive looking water fall. It has so many different steps. The slow exposure shows the flow of the water perfectly. I agree on the part of the exposure and I am tempted to say that it needs some rotation, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I really like your POV shooting through the trees.
TFS,
Niek
