| Taking a stroll in the golden evening sun in the little town of Lake Tekapo in New Zealand's South Island, I looked up to see these magpies. Parent and teenager, I think. This is the Australian magpie, known in NZ as the makipae, and formally known as Gymnorhina tibicen. These magpies didn't fly over from Oz - they were introduced (like quite a few other birds in NZ). The idea was to help control insect pests on farm land. There is apparently a totally black version also in NZ, but I never saw that one - this is the white-backed magpie. |
