Tomtit

North Island Species: Miro miro

South Island Species: Ngiro ngiro

Family: Muscicapidae

The Tomtit is endemic to NZ with 5 closely related sub-species, with Pied and Yellow-breasted Tits illustrated. Fully protected. Tomtit are found throughout NZ in native and exotic forest, with the Pied Tit in the North Island and the Yellow-breasted Tit in the South Island. They feed on grubs and insects, often caught in flight. Breeding is from September to February and 2 broods are produced. The nest is of moss, bark and cobwebs lined with feathers and located in hollows in tree trunks, rock crevises or sometimes in a branch fork up to 10mts. The eggs, 3-4, are cream, with light yellowish and purplish-brown spots densest at the larger end. The female only incubates.

I like it very much.
TFS Pam.

Hi Pam,

I agree with Fatih, this bird is amazingly cute, we're so unlucky we don't have a chance to see this beauty with our own eyes.

The positioning of the subject, the composition, sharpness and colors are superb. Is there a bit of noise on BG, I don't trust my monitor at work though.A good work indeed.

Well Done & TFS.

Hello Pam,
a nice image of the tomtit. The contrast between the white and dark parts is good. It does not look crystal sharp though, but that may also be a side effect of resizing (which happens to some pictures of me, which seem sharp in PS, but on TN it seems less). I nevertheless like the picture.

Irrisistable capture, Pam!
This shot keeps to your usual high standards, sharp, well composed, good BG and you have the desirable glint in the Tomtit's eye.
Do you have these little birds in the garden?
Best wishes, Ivan

Very nice shot. I really like the earth tones and colors in this photo. Very well exposed and great sharpness and details. These little tit birds are very cute. The tits we have around here are kinda a dull gray or brown.
