Ornate Limpets
Cellana ornata

Grazing Shellfish:
The middle shore is the domain of grazing shellfish (molluscs). When the tide is high during the night, molluscs such as Limpets (Cellana species) feed on the algae clothing the rocks.
When the tide is out during the day, young molluscs shelter in crevices or under rocks, but larger limpets and chitons will withstand full exposure to the elements by clinging to the rock surface with their muscular foot.

Home Invasion:
Ornate limpets (Cellana ornata) usually return to the same spot on the rocks after their nightly feed. A marked limpet was observed moving onto its neighbour’s spot. When the resident limpet returned it pushed against the intruder for 20 minutes, then settled some distance away. During the next high tide the offending limpet moved off to feed and the ousted limpet returned directly to its home site, staying put without feeding for the tidal cycle. The intruder returned to its own spot after feeding.

I found this group of Ornate Limpets in a pool at 10 Mile, just north of 9 Mile, which funnily enough, is not far north of 7 Mile.

Hello Stevie,
this is a very nice somewhat abstract picture. I think it needs an eye for detail. Fine brown tones combined with the grey colours of the rocks.
Isn't there a 8 mile beach?
Regards, Jacob

Hi Steve,
This is a very informative shot. It gives a great view of these molluscs. Great for Identification,
Thanks,
Nick :-)

Nice shot Steve. I like the composition and the arrangement within the group. Not only is it informative from a Natural History perspective, it is also an interesting pictorial pattern shot, very monochromatic with just a touch of colour. Well seen and well captured.

Hi Steve
very different objects for your portfolio. It maybe first time that there is no green colors in your post. But very nice shot of patella or shellfish. Nicely composed with nice colors. DOF, Details and sharpness also very nice. You prepare always good and informative notes. Thanks.
best wishes my friend.

Beautiful abstract of these limpets - the colors are great in the shells and rocks, making an interesting view of a fairly mundane subject - well done!

Hi Steve,
Interesting post and species mf.
I can see why they're called "ornate" limpets with their shell design/markings.
Great note, Well done.
