New Zealand Native Orchid
Caladenia lyallii
Subalpine. Bealey Valley, Arthur’s Pass.

Photography rules are broken here. Taken in sunlight to show the glistening of the Caladenia’s petals and hairy stem. Beautiful small treasures to come across while out walking alpine tracks.
One to 4 flowers of 2-3cm diameter grow on a 5-20cm long, hairy, upright stem. At the base, a single long leaf up to 1cm wide. (No leaf shown in this photo) The flowers are white or pinkish, the dorsal sepal often tinged brown-pink and arched over the column and labellum. The labellum may be striped red and white and carries 4 regular rows of calli.

Hi kathleen,
I love Orchids and this is a really beautiful species which I've never seen before. It looks like a really delicate flower. Your presentation of the whole plant and the insert of the flower also has a great educational thought to it.
Excellent work on the sharpness and exposure, even if a small part is a bit hot.
TFS,
Niek

Beautifully presented Kathleen.
This is an orchid I haven't found yet.
Lots of the wee spider orchids, hooded orchids and Earina, and Thelymitra, but not these.
That Bealy River is a beautiful area.
I stopped there a few weeks ago and found some fantastic fungi.
I'm thinking of heading over there this weekend.
Cheers,Steve

What a wonderful picture of this white orchid. I too love orchids and have posted many of my own as well. They are such wonderful plants, which can be very difficult to photograph. You have managed it really well here despite the bright sunlight and a white flower. I think you would have managed ISO 100 quite happily and could have just toned down the exposure a touch using the AEB button and the dial, a setting of -1EV would probably have helped... but you may have already done this anyway!

I really like the presentation and the DOF is excellent.

Many thanks for showing us this lovely picture.

Hello Kathleen!
The name of this species clearly suggest that this has to be an old species (name almost like "Caledonia"). I also guess that it is endemic to NZ.
Presentation is very nice and well composed. I like combination of 2 photos and the nice, black frame. DOF, POV, and details are very good and the note interesting and informative.
Many thanks for showing this small beauty and have a nice afternoon!
Regards,
Radomir

Of course the subject of the picture is well clarified not only in nootes, but in unique presentation. This is something a graphics designer would do...my daughter in law works for Susanne Sommers ads...as such.

I very much like the presentation which is a form of installation art. Good job.

Great layout! Do you work in graphics design by any chance? You have an eye and talent for this stuff.
Beautiful flower -great focus, color and light.

An unusual presentation that works well Kathleen,

It's like I'm looking at a glossy coffee table top book.
Very professional.
