NZ Native Orchid.
Greenhood Orchid, Pterostylis oliveri

In this photo the labellum is in a tripped position.
The Greenhoods possess an intriguing technique for pollination of their flowers. They have a touch sensitive lip, which when touched by a small insect, flips backwards, and as such the labellum traps the unsuspecting insect within the flower. The only means of escape for the entrapped insect is to crawl over the stigma and through a small tunnel, then past the pollen to freedom. The labellum usually resets itself after about half an hour, but of course the insect doesn't know this.

Pterostylis oliveri.
PLANT: 10 to 30cm high when in flower. Robust.
LEAVES: 3 to 4 fairly broad leaves, often with wavy margins. Either forming a basal rosette, or scattered up the stem.
FLOWER: Single. 4 - 5cm high. Green with white stripes. Dorsal sepal very long and strongly curled downward. Lateral sepals long and more or less erect. Labellum narrow triangular.
FLOWERING TIME: November to January.
HABITAT: Montane to sub-alpine open scrub and low bush from Arthur's Pass north to Golden Bay. Is the dominant Greenhood in the Arthur's Pass area.

An interesting Pterostylis Kathleen.
I've only photographed the banksii so far.
A nice clear shot with great DOF keeping both the lateral sepals clear.
Great job.
Steve

Hi Kathleen,
this is a very nice picture of a new flower for me.
Very good DOF, the whole plant is in good focus and the BG nicely in OOF. Well composed and fine details.
Well done.

Hi Kathleen,

I have never seen an orchid like this one - it is beautiful. The colors and sharpness are perfect. The plant has a wonderful shape and stands out well from the pretty background. A lovely composition.

Jane

Exquisite is the word me mum would say. Course by 92yrs. when she passed, everything and every day was as beautiful as this lovely click. I shall enjoy it for her, as it reminds me of her.

Bob

Maravillosa toma de esa curiosa y desconocida orquídea para mí. Saludos Kathleen.

Hi Kathleen,
What a beautiful orchid. The subtle white color in the flower is really wonderful. The fact that you captured it with some water drops on the plant is perfect. I am impressed that you were able to locate it. It seems to be well camoflaged.

Niek

Lovely composition. The dew drop is the cherry on top - great green with a certain delicacy. Good pov. Interesting as well.

Hello Kathleen,
This is a delicate capture of a very interesting plant. In NZ, you have such stunning vegetation! I like those details, natural exposure and great DOF with nice ferns in BG. This is well done! Thanks,
Claudine
