[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is another of the shots I took at Arthurs Pass of a Kea in its natural habitat.
Although the Kea up there tend to hang around the car parks a lot,it is possible to follow them for some distance and still approach them in a more natural environment.
I was pleased to be able to capture this one in a nice green setting, surrounded by the natural native flora of the subalpine region it lives in.
I know this one is a very centred composition, but I quite like it like this.

The Kea (Nestor notabilis) is common in the mountains of New Zealands South Island and feeds on berries, buds, leaves and roots,as well as insects and carrion. They have even been known to attack trapped or injured sheep and lambs.
They are well known for their cheeky impetuousness and their tendency to vandalise cars parked in mountain areas. They will quickly strip the rubber from windscreen wipers and the rubber seals around windows and doors.
Males have longer upper mandibles which are more curved than those of the female.
Keas nest in hollows on the ground, laying 2-4 white egggs on twigs and leaves.

Hope you like the shot.
Cheers,
Steve

Hello Steve,
What a great camouflage! Fantastic sharpness, focus and natural colours in this photo. Excellent POV and environment.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Steve

Great shot of the Kea in it's natural habitat. Nicely sharp with good feather detail.

A little less depth of field would have helped separate the bird a little more from the background while still retaining background information for the Natural History value of the image. Of course it does show how well camouflaged this character is in it's natural environment!

I have also included a workshop to show what the image would be like with a slight colour and levels adjustment and a small crop from the left.

Cheers
Elizabeth

Hi Steve!

I like these birds very much - they look definitelly cool. This one is really well camouflaged. Nice beak and face.

Oh, and you know what? It doesn't look like alchemical symbol at all :-)

Hello Sir
Boy does this Kea ever blend in well to the background, I'm sure he finds this useful at times.
I do like the way you've captured him with his feathers slightly ruffled. It brings out the nice texture and details. Nice POV, good colour and composition.
