Winter has pretty much arrived here in the deep South and it felt like time for a trip to the mountains again,so I gathered my kids and my partners kids and headed to Arthurs Pass for the day.
This shot of the beautiful species of Nothofagus found in the mountains, was taken a little way up the Bealey Valley beneath the impressive snowy peaks of Mount Rolleston which is behind me in this shot. Here we are looking across the main highway towards Mt Franklin, home to the Temple Basin skifield.
The vegetation up here is very different to the subtropical vegetation of the coast road, about than an hours drive away.
These hardy beech forests interspersed with species of Coprosma,Hebes,Pseudopanax,Pittosporum,Dracaena and a few podocarps, such as Rimu and Kahikatea, are home to the well known cheeky mountain parrot, the Kea.
Hope you enjoy the view.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Steve , a very nice landscape , the looks of that dense forest makes me wonder at what lies within waiting for a camera ;-) . the photo has good composition , color , and a nice field.

I really like the name of the pass ;-)

Hello Steve,
Great S. Island mountain view with the first snows of your winter on the peaks and with a fine perspective provided by the FG trees and well composed with the diagonally placed slopes.
Thanks for sharing this fine glimpse of your home area,
Cheers, Ivan

Hi Steve. An excellent example of NZ bush and alpine scenery in one. Those trees in the foreground look like virgin bush for sure. A wonderful composition, makes me a bit homesick for NZ. TFS. Murray.
