[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This colourful little Spider Orchid has never been photographed before,according to New Zealand native orchid expert Eric Scanlen.

When I was up at Arthurs Pass, in the Southern Alps on November 2nd I walked up a stream towards a waterfall at about 780m above sea level.
In a shady nook of a steep gorge, I found a small colony of orchids, and manged to take a few reasonable photos with the Raynox DCR150 lens on my Lumix FZ8

I didn't recognise the flower, so as soon as I got home I searched the NZNOG (New Zealand Native Orchid Group) website for the ID.
The nearest I could find was a tiny orchid called Nematoceras pygmy, but that wasn't exactly the same, and the region and flowering season were all wrong.

I sent the photos to Eric Scanlen in Auckland for a second opinion. HJe informed me that this was a distinct taxon, never before photographed.
He has tagged it Nematocaras "triarthurs" for now
(Nematoceras being a group of Spider Orchids, some of which were formerly known as Corybas, and trilobum being the aggregate of trilobed leaf varieties)

Now it is just up to the pundits to argue the case for a seperate nomenclature based on the differences. Such a process can sometimes take months or even years!

I'm just happy to have found such a little beauty, and to be able to share it with you.

Here is some extra information about Spider Orchids, copied from the NZNOG website ....

Spider Orchids

Spider Orchids are small shy plants, often found on damp banks or dark areas of the forest floor. They can form quite dense colonies that carpet the ground. They have a single oval shaped leaf close to ground level. The solitary flowers of many of the species have very long thin sepals, which give the plants their spider-like appearance. Most species flower from August to November.

Spider orchids include the genera: Nematoceras, Molloybas, Anzybas, Corybas, and Singularybas.

There are still a number of un-named species currently included within the Nematoceras trilobum aggregate... hopefully they will be sorted out soon to end the current confusion.
