[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I don't know whether or not this bay has a real name, but it is the bay on which the old gold mining settlement of Barrytown is situated.
The Paparoa ranges which flank the bay are rich in quartz and coal, and gold can still be found in some quantity.
It is not uncommon to find greenstone (Jade) on the beaches here along with lots of driftwood. Hence, many of the local inhabitants are skilled wood and stone carvers.
Seafood is plentiful here, and there are several rare species that make their homes here, including the Westland Black Petrel, and the Little Blue Penguin.
The forests nearer the coast and lower down are subtropical broadleaf and podocarp forest, giving way to Beech forest, then low alpine scrub towards the snowline.
Despite being so close to snowy mountains, this area is much warmer than Pirongia in the North Island where I used to live until recently.
Consequently, although it is midwinter here,I have spent the last two days on the beach fishing in a t-shirt.

Fishing, in a t-shirt, midwinter, sign me up please!
This is a lovely, coastal landscape Steve, I feel sorry, that you have to endure such paltry surroundings and air quality.
Well done on this fine composition and note.
TFS.

What are you catching?

Yeah Steve!

Picture from my dreams. Ocean and sky, green land and clouds... And fishing in t-shirts ;-) What more human can want ;-) ? Paradise for sure!

Nice place to live Steve. You will see some ruggard weather here over time. A photo just waiting to be taken. Awesome landscape. Nice work. Thanks for showing us your stomping ground.

An unusual black beach, is it volcanic in origin? This is a beautiful place...I'd like to see New Zealand next time I'm down under.

I like your POV and the bright bit on the left from the sun. Nice post, Steve!
