This landscape is typical of many lowland coastal areas of Westland, the coastal area west of the Southern Alps in New Zealands South Island.
This is also an excuse to show off the view from my future house,as this is taken from my house site on our new land at Barrytown.
Most of the native bush here is regrowth after extensive logging and mining by settlers here through the last two centuries. The area experienced several gold rushes, and has always been mined for coal.
The lowland forest is populated by many common coastal species, divaricating shrubs such as Coprosmas and Hebes,Flax (Phormium cookianum),New Zealand Cabbage Tree (Cordyline australis),the gnarly Whiteywood or Mahoe (Melicytus ramiflora) and the taller canopy trees such as Kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydiodes).
The higher slopes have some of the lowland plants, but eventually give way to Beeches and sub-alpine plants towards the snow line.
The scarring and flattened trees on the hill on the right is tornado damage.
Snow can sometimes be seen on the mountain tops from here, but frosts are rare.
From our house we can also see the alps stretching down the coast as far as Mount Cook on a clear day.

Hello Steve

Lovely landscape. Excellent POV showing so many different colours. Truely New Zealand. The main stand of Cabbage Tree looks extremely healthy with good strong growth. Nice work. Thanks.

Hey Steve,

I'm so glad that you posted that man. The colors remind me of where I come from --- those browny-greens.

Thanks man

Beautiful landscape Steve. Colorful and contrasting pictures, I think a lot of interesting plants and animals live in the forest.

Very interesting post and I like the image a lot. The colours are rich and the composition very good. The shadows adds a nice touch as well.

Very well done and thanks for posting
