Well ... its early autumn here in New Zealand, and the first of the pretty fungi are beginning to appear in our local forests.
Yesterday I found some beautiful blue Entoloma in the bush up the road. It was a little late and not light enough for a good clear shot, but I returned this evening to take a few shots using my LCD headlamp.
Hope you like the result.

Here is some info about the mushroom.

Description: Pileus 15-50 mm diam., conical to sharply umbonate, edge inturned (even in aged carpophores), light blue turning greenish blue and finally ochraceous coloured near the apex, hygrophanous, striate towards the margin, dry, appressed fibrillose. Lamellae adnexed or subfree, bluish when young, becoming bluish-reddish brown to pink brown, moderately crowded, gill edge concolorous, even or irregularly scalloped. Stipe 50-100(-150) x 3-5 mm, cylindrical, equal or attenuated upwards, concolorous with pileus, fading to brownish, whitish at the base, dry, fistulose, fragile, fibrillose, frequently twisted. Context bluish or bluish-greenish (especially at the base). Odor and taste indistinct. Chem. reactions: on pileus: KOH - light reddish-brown; HCl yellowish; NH3- negative.
Spore print purplish or deep red-brown. Spores 11-15 x 11-14 µm, cuboid. basidia 40-60 x 15-20 µm, 4-spored. Cheilocystidia 40-60 x 8-14 µm, fusoid, with long tapering and apically rounded neck, membrane thin-walled. pleurocystidia none. Cuticle a cutis composed of repent or slightly suberect, cylindrical hyphae (5-13 µm diam.), terminal cells rounded, membrane thinwalled, with indistinct plasmatic pigment. Clamp connections present.
Habitat: Among litter and moss on soil particularly in broad-leaved forests and Podocarpus-forests, rarely occurring in Nothofagus-bush. New Zealand.
Notes: This fungus is common in the lowland-forests of New Zealand, especially on the western side of the three islands. The pale blue or greenish colours of this beautiful Entoloma attracted the interest of all collectors (Haast, Hochstetter, Colenso, Berggren) since the very beginning of botanical investigations in this country (see Stevenson 1962: I.c.). So it is not surprising that the species was subsequently described several times (see list of synonyms).
According to our present knowledge, the closest relatives of E. hochstetteri occur in Japan (Imazeki & Hongo 1962) and North America (Hesler 1967).

When you write that you have, very a few light nevertheless see I here a wonderful mushroom, this type can I not find in Belgium. Very well picture, yes the autumn is a wonderful period in the year for nature photographers.

Now thats an interesting description were did it come from. I guess I could work that out for my self if I had not had so much rum tonight :) The spore colour is interesting Entoloma's are generally described as pink. I like the way the light is hitting both the fungi and the plant now do you have a name for this :) TFS

Oh Steve, what a beauty this blue fungus is. I love it how it is poking out of the greenery and is standiing there all on its own.
And what an well ordered composition it is too.

Thats a long time ago, but you will back with a beautiful mushroom. The name sounds a bit Germans or Swiss. I think you are very succesful with using your LCD Headlamp.I´m agree what Fungiman said, I like also the way the light is hitting both the fungi and the plant now. A good decision. Hello Steve,

I have never seen a blue fungus before! No wonder they are so frequently included in fairy stories; this has a magical quality.
It looks well against the mosses with just a hint of a shadow across its stalk.

Wow Steve, I've never seen a blue fungi, it is very "pretty" I like the effect with the lamp on it. It's good to see one of your lovely fungi photos again. I like the green plant next to it, sort of an "odd couple" pose with the plant almost introducing us to the blue fungi, well done.

As always, I'm amazed by looking at this wonderful mushroom, most of all if I'm looking at such a nice composition as this one. Absolutely perfect. One of Your best shots. Bravo.

Something more, a bit personal: here in Hungary there are 11 Entoloma species living, but the only one I ever found is E. clypeatum. None of them are so spectacular as this specie. But to show You a really spectacular one from Central Europe, check out Hygrocybe calyptriformis, which is as nice as this famous NZ fungus and with almost the same habit. Very rare in Hungary.
