Song Thrush. Turdus philomelos
Introduced from Europe. Common throughout New Zealand.
Eats insects, grubs and earthworms, takes some fruits.
The familiar musical song is often prolonged and delivered from a conspicuous tree-top perch. It is far-carrying, with the loudest parts audible at over half a mile. Finest performances are often restricted to the evening before the birds enter thick cover to roost.
Song thrushes are less "go ahead" than ever-abundant blackbirds and tend to feed closer to cover. They progress by short runs or a series of hops with pauses and an always alert posture. Often the head is held on one side as if listening.
They do not form flocks, although several birds may be loosely associated in suitable habitat.
Later in the year, when nesting is in full swing, the most sustained song is given by male thrushes still unpaired or which have lost mates.
They nest in bushes or hedges, laying four or five eggs (bright glossy blue with black spots) in a neat cup-shaped nest lined with clay. The female incubates for about 14 days; the young fledge in about the same time. Song Thrushes may raise two or three broods in a year.
Song Thrushes, at about 22–23 cm long and 70–90 g in weight.

Lovely composition in the branches. Nice focus. Great detail particularly in the chest feather.

Hi Kathleen,
A very beautiful bird. Very well framed. POV and DOF are excellent. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Kathleen,
A lovely capture of this proud looking thrush.
The first pic I ever took with my first digital (my 2mp Lumix) was a thrush at a distance on a pile of firewood branches.
Thats when I learnt about camera shage and zoom ... otherwise it would have been a great shot :)
The very first photo I critiqued on TN was Gert Elstroms (ellis49) 'Fieldfare in a Rowan Tree' a wonderful shot of a European thrush.
Nice work.

Hello Kathleen,
This is a fine shot of a Song Thrush, showing his speckled breast to advantage while he is singing in what must have been your springtime. Your composition fits the POV nicely and the thrush is sharp and stands out well against the blurred BG of his environment.
TFS and best wishes, Ivan

It's a beautiful bird and a nice presentation with perfect understated frame. I like that you photographed this bird in a natural woodlands environment. Details are excellent, colors are natural, and I like the glint of light in the eye. Composition is perfect.
