Another shot of the fascinating coastline within the Paparoa National Park.
These are the well known 'Pancake Rocks' at Dolomite Point,Punakaiki.
Limestone landscapes such as this are known as karst after a region in Yugoslavia where it occurs.
Karren is the name given to this type of limestone formation caused by a combination of chemical and physical erosion.
Limestone rock is made up of marine organisms that have been deposited on the sea bed in layers over many thousands of years.
Because the rock is predominantly calcium carbonate,it can be dissolved by weak organic acids.
Rainwater containing carbon dioxide becomes carbonic acid,which seeps into fissures between the layers,and start to dissolve the calcareous rock.
As the fissures widen,water washes in silt and small particles of rock,which in turn begin to erode the rock widening the fissure. As more and more material washes through the rate of erosion increases until very large fissures are created.We know these as cave passages.
The point where water goes into a cave is called a submergence or sinkhole,and whjere it emerges is the resurgence.
As wider passages form sometimes the roof collapses,either forming a collapse chamber within the cave,or an opening called a shaft or pothole.
Underneath these pancake rocks are a network of passages and caverns through which I have paddled my kayak at low tide.
At the time this photo was taken,I was living at the rivermouth in the bay you can see just beyond the rocks.
(You can actuallyy see the roof of my house near the bend in the road in this shot)
It definitelty has to be the best spot I've lived in to date.

This is a really cool landscape Steve, I love the formation of the sea carved rocks it really make an interesting image, New Zealand is Gorgeous! :)
Well shoot!! How come you get to live in such a wonderful spot?????????? Well, at least you are sharing it with us. It is an interesting and unique landscape/seascape. I like the strong foreground in this image and the depth of the scene. The colors and sharpness look very natural.

These limestone formations are really fascinating and your landscape very dramatic and beautiful. I like the depth of focus, the beautiful light and the distant low clouds. You've obviously chosen a fabulous place to live at!
