Tui, Prosthermadera novaeseelandiae
In a Kowhai Tree feeding on the nectar of the Kowhai flowers, I have added some out of focus flowers with little detail in the background.

Tui are unique (endemic) to New Zealand and belong to the honeyeater family, which means they feed mainly on nectar from flowers of native plants such as kowhai, puriri, rewarewa, kahikatea, pohutukawa, rata and flax. Occasionally they will eat insects too. Tui are important pollinators of many native trees and will fly large distances, especially during winter for their favourite foods.
Tui will live where there is a balance of ground cover, shrubs and trees. They are quite aggressive, and will chase other tui and species such as bellbird, silvereye and kereru away from good food sources.
In colour, the Tui is a shining metallic green with bluish purple reflections on the shoulders, upper tail coverts and lower breast, the hind neck ornamented with filamentous plumes. Under its throat hang two little tufts of snow–white feathers, called poies.

Hello Kathleen,
I like the unusual POV of this interesting bird and what a beautiful collar he's got! Excellent DOF, sharp details and fine colours. The composition with the flowers in the background is brilliant. Very well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Kathleen

A lovely shot of the inquisitive Tui. Nice catchlight. I like his pose. They are everywhere at the moment with the Kowhai in flower.

Hi Kathleen,
great pose you've caught here of this exotic looking bird (well exotic to us in England anyway). Good job on the exposure to retain detail in that dark plummage too and perfect composition. Very well done indeed.
Paul

Hi Kathleen,
Nice composition with great colors, we see well the details of the plumage in spite of the lack of light, TFS

nice tui, TFS Ori

realy impressive shot with many details, superb colors and sharpness, I like so much the light into the eye and the pose of bird,
splendid composition,
cheer,
friendly,
Pat

You seem to catch them in th emost unusual poses. Very nicely done. I am not throwing the word fine focus around as much these days. Yours is of course, but I am having some problems with it myself...must figure what I am doing wrong. Yet, nothing wrong with this example of a bird which many have not seen I am sure.
Bob

Interesting POV. It seems like we're above the bird, maybe in the tree. :-) Very nice sharp image with good clarity to bring out the details of this dark colored bird. Well done.

TFS!
Reid

Hi Kathleen,
It's a very beautiful bird. The POV is very interesting and nice. Good pose, focus, sharpness, composition and details. TFS
Best wishes,
Selen

Hi Kathleen,
Everytime when I see a photo of this very beautiful bird I have to think of the Sigma advertisement. They have a wonderful photo of the tui but with less details and less colors as yours. The details in the feathers are very beautiful and the shiny coat came out perfectly. The curious pose is very interesting.
TFS,
Niek

Kathleen, this is very beautiful.

Excellent exposure, sharpness and pov.

I like colors and saturation too.

Great pose.

Hi Kathleen,
this photo is a fascinating looking one to me as I have never before seen one of these guys.He looks almost like an over dressed crow or blackbird and you say it is an aggressive animal so my crow comparison is not to far off the mark.Good detail, colour and an interesting looking subject make this an excellent addition to TN.Tfs.
