[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Filmy Ferns (Hymenophyllaceae) are a very distinctive group of native ferns, characterised by delicate looking, thin, often translucent fronds.
They make a marvellous sight in damp sunlit areas as the sun shines through the foliage, reflecting tiny jewel like droplets of water to create a shimmering spectacle across the forest floor.
They are actually a lot hardier than they look.In dry weather they will dry and shrivel up completely, appearing to be dead, but will be quickly revived to their full glory after a short spell of rain.
There are 6 species of Trichomanes,5 of which grow on the forest floor or on rocks, while one is epiphytic.
The most distinctive and attractive is Trichomanes reniforme, the Kidney Fern.
It has a slender stalk up to 25 cm long, and round kidney shaped blades 3-10 cm long x 4-13 cm wide.
The sori,or spore producing organs cannot be seen here,as this is taken in the autumn, but they are usually arranged around the margin of the blade, unlike most ferns, which have the sori on the undersides of the fronds.
Obviously, these ferns favour damp, partially lit environments, although they can exist in trees exposed to a degree of bright sunlight.
