Once again, this is the cloud forest, just below the tree line on the western side of the Paparoa Ranges.
This is an amazing place, where the bulk of the trees comprise Beech (Nothofagus) species.
There are 4 species of southern beeches, one with 2 varieties.
In New Zealand,Nothofagus tend to dominate forests which are too cold for other native species.
Hard Beech and Black Beech are known as the lowland species,Red,Silver and Mountain Beech are the montane beeches that grow at colder altitudes.

Another tree that sometimes makes up cloud forests at similar altitudes is Kamahi (Weinmannia racemosa)
It often begins as an epiphyte on a tree trunk, but can become a tree up to 25 metres tall, sometimes with several intertwined trunks.

Of course, being the West Coast of New Zealand, the rainfall here is very high, and the forest remains damp pretty much all year round.
Even in summer,it is often shrouded in mist or clouds,so mosses and lichens thrive in abundance.

We are coming into our autumn months here .... March,April and May are our best months for fungi,so I hope to make a few trips up to this 'mystical' forest again soon.

Unfortunately,I dropped my Lumix FZ8 the other day,and it seems to be buggered,so I'm going to try and sell my electric guitar to buy another camera.
For now,I am able to borrow Kays camera,my old Lumix FZ5 so I'll at least be able to take a few 5mp shots.

Hope you like this one.
Cheers & thanks for looking,
Steve

This is fascinating picture Steve! I like places like this much more than sandy beaches or icy mountains. Beautifull view of old, mossy trees. Very mystical mood. Trees from BG looks great.

Hi Steve,

Beautiful shot mate, the only thing lacking would be an audio track of the sounds of the forest. Wounderful colours, excellent detail and d.o.f. My wife and I are going to have to get down their one day, lovely work, t.f.s

Cheers Rick :)

Hy Steve
I like all your pictures with this kind of forests!A mixture of dead wood with green moss and some mist! Probably this are old forests, untached by human hand!
Regards, Oana

Hi Steve,
this is really wonderful scene. How i love to be in this place. Calm and peaceful. the mosses in its surrounding is very captivating. you showed it in a very skillfull manner. Well composed and presented.
It make me think of the scene shot in the story like the Lord of the rings etc.
Something that is really hard for us to see in our country, at least me.
Indeed thanks for sharing the shot.

Regards,
Foozi
