[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today I took a walk along the Coal Creek walkway near Runanga,just north of Greymouth.
The forest here is mixed native broadleaf,podocarp and beech forest,so there is a wide range of fungi to be found.
I found plenty of species,and took plenty of good shots with Kays camera,my trusty old Lumix FZ5.

One of my highlights of the day was a close encounter with a bird,just as I was heading back up the track to go home.
I had stopped to try and photograph a blue puffball (Chamonixia pachydermis) on a mossy bank at the side of the path.While I tried to focus on it I became aware of a South Island Robin jumping from branch to branch around me.
While I was looking at the fungi through the viewfinder,I heard a slight rustle very close to my head. Looking up,I saw the Robin standing right in front of my camera,looking at me,only about 30cm in front of my face!
Unfortunately,it was getting dark,and there was not enough light to capture either the bird or the fungi.
.... next time :)

I originally posted this photo believing the species to be Weraroa erythrocephala,the Red Pouch Fungi,but Lazslo,Christopher & Clive have all said that they think this a Russula.
Clive has gone as far as to suggest a new ID of Russula macowanites carmineus also now known as Russula kermesina.
It also looks very much like i mages I have seen of Russula emetica.

I seem to be outnumbered here,and I have no reason to doubt three accomplished mycologists,so I have updated my title and notes accordingly.

My, what bad luck to miss the Robin at such a close diatance, Steve! You could have taken a pot shot.
Anyway, this mushroom looks delicious, but I suppose you can't eat every species of them :).
The image is beautiful. The red hat of this fungus looks wonderful against the green BG of mosses.

You had a beautiful day yesterday (today? - depend on where You live) - thank You also very much for Your e-mail, I'll answer it right now.
Great shot. Firstly I thought it's a Russula, but of course if You check out the pic more properly You can realize it's something else. Made a search on Index Fungorum on the genera and the specie, here's the result: although Weraroa genus is valid and having now 6 species, this on the pic is officially named Leratiomyces erythrocephalus (Tul. & C. Tul.) Beever & D.-C. Park (2008). You know, the neverending taxonomical game... :)

I like the POV on this "Red Pouch Fungi" Steve, looked to me like a "Russula". Composition, DOF and focus are very nice! I'm a huge fan of the surrounding Moss in your photo's! Keep it coming!

Dear Lord,
such an amazing creation. Very bright red among the soft green. With the look it is so delicious, but of course cannot be consumed.
Well shown with clarity and excitement for its protuding style.
well composed with clarity and habitat that surround this special fungi.
